COP28 Hub

About COP28 HUB

Serves as a platform dedicated to gathering perspectives from individuals of diverse backgrounds, encompassing various cultures, age groups, and communities.

Its primary objective is to amplify the voices of ordinary individuals, providing them with a forum to share their opinions and relay their firsthand experiences regarding the impact of climate change on their daily lives.

The ultimate goal is to channel these collective insights to the leaders and decision-makers at COP28, ensuring that the broader spectrum of perspectives is considered in shaping climate policies and initiatives.

What is Conference of parties “COP”?

In the three decades since the Rio Summit and the launch of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP) has convened member countries every year to determine ambition and responsibilities and identify and assess climate measures. The 21st session of the COP (COP21) led to the Paris Agreement, which mobilized global collective action to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2100, and to act to adapt to the already existing effects of climate change.

Ever since the first COP in Berlin in 1995, COP have been used to review what Parties (the countries who signed up) have achieved, and measure progress. They are also where negotiations take place for the next round of emissions reductions. They are a vital means of monitoring the progress made so far and working out the targets that need to be achieved in the future if we are to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement.

COP28 is a crucial moment in global transformative climate action so what is COP28?

COP28 UAE is a critical opportunity for the world to come together, drive progress and address the need of everyone to be more ambitious in the fight against climate change to meet the goals and ambition of the Paris Agreement.

A ‘leave no one behind’ approach to climate action will be emphasized by COP28. The principles of transformation, solidarity, pragmatism, and inclusivity are being underscored by all efforts. A COP of action and a COP for all are deemed necessary by the world.

What are the four pillars of COP28?

Pillar 1 – Fast-tracking the transition to clean energy.

This pillar points up the urgency of rapid action in transitioning to clean energy and reducing emissions.  A comprehensive approach to addressing emissions across all scopes is promoted, along with encouragement for diversification into renewables and hydrogen production by 2030. Additionally, the emphasis lies in utilizing various emission reduction technologies, including nuclear and carbon capture, especially in challenging sectors.

Pillar 2 – Fixing climate finance for COP28 and beyond

This pillar addresses the recommendations on a new framework for international climate finance to COP28, along with a roadmap for implementing these recommendations to deliver progress at COP29 and COP30.

Pillar 3 – Adaptation to protect lives and livelihoods

This pillar focuses on addressing climate change in emerging markets and developing economies, estimated to require US$2.4 trillion annually by 2030, with a framework encompassing nature, health, food, and resilience for the Global Goal on Adaptation.

Pillar 4 – Full inclusivity from wider society

This pillar seeks to enhance inclusiveness through initiatives like a youth delegate program and indigenous pavilion, emphasizing the importance of inviting all segments of society to contribute to climate and economic progress.
