Renewable Energy and New Electricity Laws: Alignment with the Economic Modernization Vision

EDAMA Association for Energy, Water, and Environment, in collaboration with Irbid Electricity Company, organized the Power Breakfast Event on Monday, December 23, 2024, under the title:
“Renewable Energy and New Electricity Laws: Alignment with the Economic Modernization Vision.”

The event brought together a distinguished group of public and private sector representatives, led by H.E. Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Dr. Dureid Mahasneh, Chairman of EDAMA’s Board of Directors, opened the session with a welcoming speech emphasizing the importance of the event in highlighting key challenges and opportunities in the energy sector. He stressed the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to achieve the national objectives of the Economic Modernization Vision in this field.

In his remarks, Minister Al-Kharabsheh stated that the government is working diligently to implement the Economic Modernization Vision, which revolves around the theme “A Better Future” and is based on two strategic pillars:

Accelerated growth by unlocking the full economic potential.
Enhancing the quality of life for all citizens, with sustainability as a core foundation and a key driver for energy diversification.
He highlighted that Jordan was an early adopter of the energy transition and is considered a regional leader in the field. The government’s National Energy Strategy aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 31% of the national energy mix, with a target of 50% in the near future.

Al-Kharabsheh also pointed out that recent legislative amendments align with the Economic Modernization Vision. These amendments were introduced after consultations with experts and studying international best practices. One of the key changes is the tax exemption on energy storage equipment and devices, which will further promote the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

Additionally, he highlighted the Time-of-Use Tariff, which offers up to a 15% discount during peak hours, encouraging consumers to optimize energy consumption. This initiative supports the expansion of renewable energy projects and helps reduce pressure on the electricity grid, which is one of the biggest challenges facing the sector.

Al-Kharabsheh further stated that the Time-of-Use Tariff was implemented for the medium-sized industrial sector starting from July 1, 2024, and will be extended to hospitals and hotels at the beginning of 2025.

The event, organized by EDAMA Association for Energy, Water, and Environment, provided a platform for public-private sector dialogue, fostering strategic partnerships that contribute to economic growth and accelerate Jordan’s green economy transition towards a more sustainable future.
