EDAMA Association participated in the National Workshop on End-of-Life Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery Recycling, organized by Circularity Hub for Spent Electric Vehicle Batteries (C-HUB) at the German Jordanian University (GJU) in collaboration with the Ministry of environment.
C-Hub envisions Jordan as a regional leader in the sustainable management of end-of-life EV batteries. The Center focuses on building a robust ecosystem for the sustainable handling and circularity of EV batteries in Jordan through applied research and multi-stakeholder collaboration. This initiative is supported by the German Government through the “Green Action in Enterprises” (GAIN) project, implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and is in cooperation with the EDAMA
The workshop opened with a presentation by Dr. Fadwa Dababneh, Director of the Center, who provided an overview of the Center and an insight into the electric vehicle sector in Jordan. This was followed by remarks from a representative of the Ministry of Environment, highlighting the measures taken by the Ministry to keep pace with the rapid growth and development in this field.
The first session of the workshop focused on four potential scenarios for managing EV battery return, reuse, safety, and replacement. Working groups were formed for each scenario, bringing together representatives from various public and private sectors, including the Ministry of Environment, the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization, car dealerships, universities, training centers, and recycling companies.
Each group worked on identifying the appropriate steps for their assigned scenario, specifying the responsible parties, identifying any gaps in implementation, and proposing solutions to address them. After analyzing all four scenarios, the results were shared with the full audience for discussion and feedback.
The workshop also included a presentation on battery tracking methods, given the hazardous nature of batteries once they reach the end of their life cycle, and explored how the government, in partnership with stakeholders, could establish a national platform to record battery data upon entry into the market to ensure proper disposal or recycling.
The event concluded with a session dedicated to identifying stakeholders and updating the stakeholder mapping and role definitions, in addition to discussing the necessary measures to be taken in the coming years to ensure that Jordan is fully prepared to address the challenges and opportunities in this growing sector.
Located at the German Jordanian University, C-Hub aims to build comprehensive partnerships with the private sector and support the government through evidence-based policy advisory.
