Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission and EDAMA Association Explore Opportunities for Developing Energy Storage Systems in Jordan

On Thursday, July 17, 2025, a coordination meeting was held between the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission and the Joint Technical Committee from EDAMA Association to discuss opportunities for developing energy storage systems in Jordan, within the framework of enhancing energy supply security and supporting the stability of the electrical grid. This meeting follows up on the outcomes of the first meeting held between the Board of Members of EDAMA Association and the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission on June 18, 2025, during which the draft instructions and regulations issued under the 2025 General Electricity Law—published in May 2025—were discussed. It was agreed at that time to form the technical committee as a step toward building strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors.

The meeting covered several key topics, including the economic feasibility of storage systems, interconnection mechanisms, and cost recovery periods across different sectors. Attention was also drawn to the importance of keeping pace with global developments in storage technologies and encouraging investment by offering incentives to consumers.

A proposal was also presented to develop a flexible tariff structure reflecting the variability of electricity demand periods, alongside emphasizing the importance of awareness campaigns in the residential sector, which accounts for about 45% of the Kingdom’s electricity consumption.

Representatives of the commission welcomed this initiative, affirming their commitment to strengthening partnerships with the private sector and unifying efforts in preparing economic studies, which positively impacts the development of the legislative and regulatory framework of the sector.
