Tuesday, August 20, 2024, EDAMA Association for Energy, Water, and Environment, in collaboration with Kawar Energy, held a high-level roundtable meeting in Amman titled “The Role of the Middle East in Energy Transition, its Impact, and Opportunities it presents for Jordan.” The meeting was attended by a distinguished group of public and private sector representatives, chaired by His Excellency Minister of Energy Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh.
Dr. Duraid Mahasneh, Chairman of EDAMA, opened the session with a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of fostering communication among all stakeholders to advance the energy transition in the region. Engineer Hanna Zghoul, CEO of Kawar Energy and a member of EDAMA Association Board of Directors, also welcomed the attendees and introduced energy expert Dr. Basel Al-Asmar and highlighted the need for a clear vision for the future development of the energy sector in the region, particularly in Jordan.
The meeting featured a presentation by Dr. Basel Al-Asmar, who offered a comprehensive view of the impact of energy transition in the Middle East on Jordan and discussed the future opportunities that Jordan can leverage for sustainable development. The presentation also addressed the increasing demand for energy and its contribution to the rising global emissions, despite over 30 years of climate policies and advancements in clean energy technologies. Dr. Al-Asmar pointed out that while emissions growth has slowed, it is expected that demand for refined products in the Middle East will continue to grow until it peaks around 2040.
This was followed by a discussion session moderated by Dr. Mahasneh, where participants explored the challenges and opportunities facing Jordan in this area and ways to enhance cooperation to support the transition to a green economy.
In his remarks, Minister of Energy Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh stated that Jordan is working on hosting new renewable energy projects and modernizing its grid to achieve the energy transition, which represents an opportunity for Jordan to contribute to the production of green energy.
It is worth noting that the Power Breakfast is a series of events organized by EDAMA, aimed at fostering discussions between the public and private sectors to build partnerships that benefit society and promote the green economy.
