Catania, 09 October 2025<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A new EU-funded initiative, MEDWISE \u2013 Mediterranean Waste Innovations for Sustainable Environments<\/strong>, has officially started under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme<\/strong>, uniting partners from Italy, Spain, Lebanon, Jordan, T\u00fcrkiye<\/strong> and Palestine<\/strong>, to accelerate the transition<\/strong> to a circular and resource-efficient economy<\/strong> in the waste management sector across the Mediterranean region.<\/p>

Who, What, When, Where and Why<\/strong><\/h3>

Launched in July 2025, MEDWISE brings together research centres and private actors to tackle the region\u2019s mounting waste crisis<\/strong>\u2014where most municipal refuse still ends up in landfills\u2014by testing and scaling innovative, circular-economy solutions<\/strong> that save resources, cut emissions, and create green jobs.<\/p>

Smart technologies for a cleaner Mediterranean<\/strong><\/h3>

The project will develop and implement three approaches<\/strong>:<\/p>

  1. AI-powered intelligent sorting<\/strong> and minimal food waste<\/strong>;<\/li>
  2. Decentralised composting<\/strong> of organic fractions;<\/li>
  3. Industrial Symbiosis<\/strong>, turning one industry\u2019s by-products into another\u2019s raw materials.<\/li><\/ol>

    Pilot actions will take place involving municipalities, associate organisations, and citizens across the partner countries, with common technology tests implemented throughout the six nations.<\/p>

    Sharing solutions and skills<\/strong><\/p>

    By facilitating cross-border knowledge exchange<\/strong> and building capacities among local authorities and businesses, MEDWISE will accelerate the transition to a resource-efficient, circular Mediterranean economy<\/strong>. The project also focuses on the human and social dimension<\/strong>, engaging students, researchers, start-ups and local operators in different cultural contexts within training and awareness-raising initiatives to transform waste into opportunity.<\/p>

    \u201cOur goal is simple but powerful: prove that waste can become a driver of innovation, competitiveness and sustainability,\u201d said Prof. Giuseppe Mancini, project coordinator from the University of Catania \u2013 Lead Beneficiary of the project. \u201cBy sharing solutions that already work, combined with innovative approaches, we can move faster towards a greener, fairer Mediterranean.\u201d<\/p>
