Project Overview

The Mediterranean region continues to face major waste management challenges, with a large proportion of municipal waste ending up in landfills. Organic waste—despite its potential as a valuable source of energy and nutrients—is often contaminated and therefore unsuitable for reuse.

The MedWISE project seeks to accelerate the shift towards a circular and resource-efficient economy by sharing and scaling proven waste management solutions. The project emphasizes:

• Adoption of innovative waste management technologies,

• Cross-border testing and validation of solutions,

• Enhanced knowledge exchange and cooperation among participating countries.

Through pilot actions such as AI-powered waste sorting, decentralized composting systems, and industrial symbiosis models, MedWISE aims to strengthen institutional capacities, increase public awareness, and support the integration of circular economy principles into national and municipal policies.

Pilot solutions will be implemented at the municipal level in Masies de Roda (Spain) and Bikfaya (Lebanon), while household-level pilots will be carried out in the remaining partner countries. A second solution will be deployed uniformly across all six project countries: Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Spain, and Türkiye.
