Round Table | Public Private Dialogue – SMART meters roll out


EDAMA for Energy, water and environment held a high-level round table-Public Private dialogue (PPD) discussion on 17 Nov 2022, Thursday. The round table PPD inaugurated a professional conversation among the concerned parties represented in Government – EMRC, MEMR, TRC, electricity companies -NEPCO, telecommunication companies, and the private sector.

This Round Table-PPD came as part of a series of other dialogues held earlier in the year 2022 and as a continuation of the advocacy efforts conducted by EDAMA to address the SMART meters Roll Out in Jordan. in the beginning, a policy paper was issued to map out stakeholders as well as assess the current situation of SMART meters in Jordan, followed by conclusions and recommendations.

To conclude the event, all parties confirmed that there is a dire need to unify the efforts in hopes of establishing ground rules for a national plan that includes the needed standards for SMART meters that will be  installed in Jordan, how will they operate in reference to telecommunication companies, taking into consideration a 360 review of the current available foundation of locating those meters in Jordanian buildings as well as, the technology to be used with a focus on cyber security.

Additionally, installations must happen in a timely manner to ensure that technologies are not outdated by the time the country fulfills its objective of transforming all regular meters into SMART meters by the end of 2025, moreover, founding a national plan to ensure keeping the systems functional and up to date.

Finally, incentives were discussed to encourage homeowners and business owners to take a step towards this shift and intensive awareness raising campaigns to educate the general public on the socio-economic benefits it will reflect on their day to day lives and Jordan’ Green Economy.
